This search engine for Mastodon instances is based on a database that gets updated by our crawler every night (CET).
Instances are considered new for 30 days after they are discovered.
When an instance has not responded to our daily checks for more than 30 days it is no longer considered in statistics and searches and it gets checked only on the first of the month, rather than daily, until it possibly responds again, or until its last succesful check is one year old; in this latter case, from that moment it gets checked only on the first day of each year.
“Random ordering” of results varies daily.
Default search criteria reflect our fondness for a decentralized and egalitarian Fediverse and our attempt to exclude instances accepting fascist, racist, sexist, ableist or sovereignist contents by marking them as noxious.

Raphus Social 🦤 is a better bird site. It is a place for bringing together open minded people interested in technology, open source, tabletop games, and other general geekery.
Named after the extinct Dodo bird, Raphus Cucullatus. As one bird site is falling apart, we found it only fitting that this server be named in honor of another bird destroyed by human arrogance.

This server strives to be a safe and inclusive environment, and is actively moderated in accordance with the rules of this server, (for more details, please see the Raphus Social Code of Conduct), and the Mastodon Server Covenant.
Note: BirdsiteLive instances are blocked. These so-called "ethical bridges from Twitter" end up creating "duplicate accounts" of people by pulling in their twitter content (without the author's permission or consent). They are limited by Twitter's api, get overloaded, become unreliable, and ultimately stop working. Because of these problems, they would cause an excessive drain on resources.
Defederation Policy
We actively defederate from other servers that are incompatible with our fundamental rules and may pose a risk to our users. The decision to defederate can come from reports by our users, community discussions about bad actors, and through the use of shared blocklists. User safety is always our number one concern, so we will proactively block problematic servers rather than wait for abuse to happen.
We also employ AUTHORIZED_FETCH (aka “Secure Mode”) to ensure that our users posts do not unknowingly end up on blocked servers.
We do not currently share our blocklist publicly due to the presence of offensive language and illegal content, but will be made available to current users upon request.
Threads.net
Meta’s policies on moderation, user safety, and privacy are not compatible with our own, so we have no intention to enable federation with Threads if/when it does become fully implemented.

Known Harassers:
The admins may ban or silence users whom we know to be harassers or abusers, even if they have not violated the rules of this instance. The mere presence of a harasser can make past or potential victims uncomfortable, and it can put potential victims who are unaware of the person's history in particular danger. Users are encouraged to individually mute, block, and/or report accounts they don't want to see, but at our discretion, we may take the additional step of blocking or silencing someone instance-wide if we believe they endanger the safe and welcoming space we're trying to maintain.

Understanding and Using CWs
Mastodon offers content warnings, which allow one to post about topics while giving others an informed opportunity to decide whether or not to read your posts. Think of them as metadata for your post. Unlike hashtags, which are another great way to find or filter data (and you can use both!), CWs allow the reader to make a choice before viewing something which they may find distressing (such as racist imagery or political trends which threaten their health/job/family/friends) or ordinary things they may or may not want to see “health” or “lewd” or “rant/whine” posts. CWs are especially important on public posts, since we all use the Local timeline. Some people write very descriptive CWs. Others use shorthands popular in the Mastodon community. Common examples of CWd topics and common shorthands:
An excellent longer-form CW example from 2018-01-22 would be “nazis on campus, everyday antifacism,” which conveys that the post both talks about an incident with nazis on campus and the response to it. Please also keep in mind, that all posts to Public appear in the Local timeline and Mastodon allows you to make some posts Followers-Only or Unlisted. On the other hand, if you see someone posting material which disturbs you without CWs in the main timeline, Mastodon’s mute function will mean you don’t see them. Filters can remove all posts containing a term (CWd and non-CWd) from a particular column.

Understanding and Using CWs
Mastodon offers content warnings, which allow one to post about topics while giving others an informed opportunity to decide whether or not to read your posts. Think of them as metadata for your post. Unlike hashtags, which are another great way to find or filter data (and you can use both!), CWs allow the reader to make a choice before viewing something which they may find distressing (such as racist imagery or political trends which threaten their health/job/family/friends) or ordinary things they may or may not want to see “health” or “lewd” or “rant/whine” posts. CWs are especially important on public posts, since we all use the Local timeline. Some people write very descriptive CWs. Others use shorthands popular in the Mastodon community. Common examples of CWd topics and common shorthands:
- Politics: “pol” with a country prefix such “uspol,” “ukpol” or more specific clarifications, such as “politics, funding” or “politics shutdown” or “politics, 45”
- Examples of hate speech by politicians/colleagues/family/students/etc.: “Hate speech” “nazis” “fascism” “antifacism” “racism” “transphobia” “white supremacist fliers”
- Sexually explicit: common shorthands include “lewd,” “kink,” “PDA”
- Mental health/suicidal ideation: common abbreviations include “mh+” (good mental health stuff), “mh-” (negative mental health), “suicide”/”sui”
- Food/alcohol/drugs/meds: generally just noting the content.
- Eye-contact selfies: some mastodon users place selfies under “eye contact” if the poster is making eye contact with the viewer1.
- Content types: “rant” “long” “whine” “spoilers”
An excellent longer-form CW example from 2018-01-22 would be “nazis on campus, everyday antifacism,” which conveys that the post both talks about an incident with nazis on campus and the response to it. Please also keep in mind, that all posts to Public appear in the Local timeline and Mastodon allows you to make some posts Followers-Only or Unlisted. On the other hand, if you see someone posting material which disturbs you without CWs in the main timeline, Mastodon’s mute function will mean you don’t see them. Filters can remove all posts containing a term (CWd and non-CWd) from a particular column.

1,092 domains can publish content to PrivacySafe Social. This number is approximate as servers go up and down.
26 domains (2.3% of total) have been suspended due to activity such as spam and repeated NSFW posts.
14 domains (1.2% of total) have been limited from posting to the public timeline. This prevents our audience of primarily English readers from being inundated with non-Latin characters. Our users can still follow accounts on those domains and share content from them.
7 users have been suspended for attempted attacks (malicious bot activity, attempted XSS injection, or penetration testing conducted on a live system without permission).
1 report was filed against a user for suspected spam activity. No moderation action was taken.

While we don't only serve adult content, this side of online communities has a strong adult focus. To ensure everyone's safety and well-being, minors are not permitted an account on blimps.xyz and if we find out you're lying your account will be suspended. You MAY be granted access again once you turn 18. If we find out you're dodging through another account, or lie that you're 18 after being reinstated, you will be permanently suspended from access. - Be respectful
Treat everyone on this and other instances with respect. We're definitely on the furrier side of things, so while I won't say "treat others like (I hope) you'd treat your mother", you get the idea. - No bigotry
Like "Be nice", racism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, and any and all forms of bigotry will not be tolerated, period. The furry community is meant to be welcoming to folks, not exclusive. - Tag NSFW content as such
While there is plenty of NSFW/adult content that this community can encompass, I expect everyone to use the Content Warning features of Mastodon to flag it as such to prevent automatically loading on others. If you will post it quite frequently, and don't wish to use the flags, you must set your account to locked when registering. We will use a three strikes system. - Zero tolerance for attacks
Repeating, there is zero tolerance for bigotry and personal insults. First offenders will have their toot moderated and given a final warning. Second offense is a ban from the instance. - Report inappropriate behavior
One of the great features for Mastodon is the ease of moderation in communities. Blimps.xyz expects all users to report any activity that violates the rules using the features built in to Mastodon for moderation and review. Use it! - No spam
This is somewhat self-explanatory but is also further outlined below. We have a zero tolerance policy for any spam or abuse of this instance and will restrict or remove your account for spam. Don't blast messages like crazy, restrict advertising to legitimate recommendations only. - No doxing
This counts as a personal attack and will not be tolerated. Blimps.xyz only collects information as outlined in our privacy policy, and will not release IPs or private information about users. You may not either. This is a zero-tolerance policy.

- No bigotry is permitted. We do not tolerate hate speech of any kind, including transphobia, homophobia, Islamophobia, or any other facet of one's being.
- Be respectful: Treat others with respect. Assume good faith with everything. Text has limited ability to convey intent; be kind with yours.
- NSFW or kink-driven content must be behind a CW giving a short summary of the content (e.g. "NSFW Art, inflation"), while ensuring media is marked as 'sensitive'
- Zero tolerance for attacks. Harassing other users, whether on this instance or another, is cause for immediate suspension of your account.
- Copyrighted content may only be shared in fair use contexts. Basically, if it would earn a DMCA takedown request filed against us, don't post it directly.
- Take care in sharing sensitive information. While the admins here simply don't have the time nor interest to pry in the database, law enforcement could still have access as your messages are not encrypted at rest, same as nearly all other platforms. When in doubt, use a private messaging platform.
